Chair's Update August 2022

Dear Members,

I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the recent warm weather!

I mentioned in July’s message that the BSA Professional Guidance Group are recruiting new members. Thank you to those of you who have been in touch so far, but we still need more members to get involved. Please do contact us if you have any questions about what this involves or would like to apply as it is a great opportunity to help support one of the BSA’s most critical and well-known functions, please contact bsa@thebsa.org.uk for more information or to arrange to speak with someone about what’s involved.

The Electrophysiology Special Interest Group are offering a day dedicated to “Using evoked potentials in older children and difficult to test adults” on Friday 18th November 2022 in Birmingham, if you are a BSA member with an interest in electrophysiology testing this one is definitely worth attending, book your place! https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/electrophysiology-special-interest-group-tickets-360998655697

Congratulations to Aleema Rahman who was the first recipient of the Roger Thornton Award, a memorial fund open to all UK based students that supports the attendance and presentation of their research at scientific conferences. Aleema presented her work relating to the “The prevalence of long-term otitis media related hearing loss in children and its impact on developmental outcomes” at the HeAL 2022 conference in Italy this summer. If you are a student considering presenting your research at a future conference why not apply for up to £1000 of financial support? https://www.www.thebsa.org.uk/the-roger-thornton-award/

And finally for this month I just wanted to say that I am very much looking forward to our September 2022 Council meeting taking place in 4-weeks’ time. This will be the first face-to-face meeting the society has held since before the pandemic, and, even more importantly, the trustees are being joined by representatives from all the Special Interest and BSA Groups. Not only will we be sharing information on the work and activity taking place as part of the standard Council reports, but we will also be looking to evaluate the Societies’ activity against the current strategy and considering the creation of next one for post 2023. I’ll let you know how we get on….
