NHS England are delighted to invite you to submit nominations for national honours.
Submissions are now open for consideration in the New Year 2027 Honours round. NHS England encourage you to recognise and nominate colleagues in healthcare science who deserve this distinction.
While the cabinet office can receive honours nominations directly and at any time, if you would like the application to receive endorsement and the written citation to be reviewed via the Office of the Chief Scientific Officer, it is asked that you complete the attached DHSC honours form (click button at end of document) and provide a minimum of two letters of support to england.cso@nhs.net by 16 January 2026 for consideration in the New Years Honours 2027 round.
Submissions for future honours rounds are also welcome at any time beyond this date. Please nominate those colleagues who have gone above and beyond the call of duty and made an outstanding impact recognised by others. We are looking for individuals, from support workers through to consultant-level scientists, who have contributed significantly to healthcare science services, professional bodies and other networks.
Awards for the Order of the British Empire is at different levels, depending on scale of contribution:
- Knight/Dame: A major (national and/or international) contribution in any activity that is seen as inspirational, significant, over a long period of time.
- Commander (CBE): A prominent national role or leading role at regional level. A person may get one for distinguished, innovative contributions in a particular area.
- Officer (OBE): A major contribution in any activity including those whose local work has made them known nationally or where their contribution is felt over a broad area.
- Member (MBE): A significant achievement or outstanding service to the community.
- British Empire Medal (BEM): A sustained, local contribution or innovative, high[1]impact work of a relatively short duration
Nominations can cover specific activities or a lifetime achievement. Status or seniority isn’t important – what matters is the person’s outstanding contribution at any level within healthcare science and the impact they have had on people’s health and care over a sustained period of time. We remain committed to increasingly the number of nominations for those who continue to be severely underrepresented, including women and black and ethnic minorities. In addition, we are keen to see candidates for the British Empire Medal, which is aimed at young people early in their career who are making a strong impact within healthcare science.
When crafting the nomination, please remember it is not about replicating an individual’s CV. There is a fine art to composing and developing a successful nomination. As well as articulating the evidence of merit it is vital to adopt the right tone and language.
