The Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) programme is seeking expressions of interest in a role as Audiology Clinical Advisor in the national GIRFT ENT team; an exciting new role dedicated to driving improvement in audiology services across England.
GIRFT is a clinically-led, data-driven national programme designed to reduce unwarranted variation in care, improve productivity and outcomes, and ensure patients receive consistently high-quality, cost-effective services regardless of where they live. GIRFT works by combining robust national benchmarking with clinically-led diagnostic reviews and targeted implementation support to drive sustainable improvement at provider and system level.
This is a genuinely exciting opportunity for an experienced audiologist to bring a dedicated audiology voice into the heart of the national ENT improvement agenda. The GIRFT ENT team has already established a strong evidence base, including national guidance on follow-up and skill-mix, and this new post will build directly on that foundation, working alongside the national clinical lead and wider ENT GIRFT team. The post-holder will have real scope to shape national priorities for audiology from the outset.
The Audiology Clinical Advisor will provide clinical advice and leadership in both adult and paediatric audiology to identify unwarranted variation in audiology pathways, scope of practice, and productivity, using Model Health System, NCIP and other national datasets. This will include supporting peer-led engagement during deep dive and peer review visits, where a credible audiology voice is essential to driving genuine clinical ownership of recommendations.
A core element of the role will be supporting the safe redesign of pathways that allow audiologists to refer directly for MRI where clinically indicated and developing the case for extending audiologist scope of practice into wax management. The post-holder will also work to influence improved interoperability between audiology systems and Electronic Patient Records and will lead the development of new audiology-specific metrics and KPIs on Model Health System, an area with no dedicated benchmarking data at present.
The post-holder will work closely with the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) and appointed audiological advisors, ensuring strong alignment with existing national audiology leadership, as well as building effective relationships with ENT UK, BAPO, BRS and the wider ENT and audiology clinical community.
We welcome applications from senior audiologists with national standing in the field, deep expertise across the audiology pathway, and a track record of leading service improvement. Credibility with the wider audiology profession and the ability to engage confidently with ENT and audiology colleagues alike will be essential.
The role will be offered via a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the post-holder’s substantive NHS trust, with the substantive employer reimbursed for 2 programmed activities (PAs) per week (or for AFC colleagues 8 hours per week) initially until the end of March 2027, with possible extension.
