Hypatia Training Ltd – BSA Certificate in Surveillance Audiometry – Milton Keynes (2 Day Beginners Course)

Day 1 required for refresher/update candidates; full 2 days required for new practitioners.

This comprehensive course provides the knowledge and practical skills required to carry out workplace surveillance audiometry in accordance with current BSA and HSE guidelines.

Day 1 focuses on the core scientific and clinical foundations of audiometry. Delegates will gain an understanding of basic acoustics, including sound pressure levels, frequency, and measurement scales. The anatomy and physiology of hearing are explored alongside the classification and characteristics of hearing loss.

Participants will learn about noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), including its pathology, risks, and wider social impact. This includes interpretation of NIHL in line with HSE guidance, the SOM approach, and the Coles, Lutman & Buffin (CLB) method.

The afternoon session introduces practical skills in otoscopy and audiometry, covering testing procedures, equipment use, calibration, and factors affecting test accuracy. The day also includes audiogram interpretation and categorisation in line with HSE guidelines.

There is a strong emphasis on hands-on learning throughout Day 1, allowing delegates—particularly those attending as updates—to practise techniques, reflect on their current skills, and consolidate best practice.

Day 2 builds on this knowledge with a focus on programme delivery and professional practice. Topics include organising audiometric surveillance programmes, legal and confidentiality considerations, reporting and referral procedures, and the role of baseline testing.

Delegates will also learn about personal hearing protection, including selection, correct use, and maintenance. The day concludes with revision followed by formal assessment.

Assessment (Day 2):
Successful completion requires passing four components:

  • Practical Otoscopy
  • Practical Audiometry
  • Written Theory Examination (multiple choice)
  • Case Study Discussion

This course equips practitioners with the competencies required to perform high-quality surveillance audiometry and contribute effectively to workplace hearing conservation programmes.
