Course highlights

By the end of this course participants should be able to:

  • Deliver flexible and strategic use of some core communications and counselling skills in the process of rehabilitative audiology.
  • Critically compare the conceptual framework and theoretical underpinnings of Motivational Interviewing (MI) with other psychological theories comprising: cognitive dissonance, reformulation of self-perception theory, Roger’s theory of necessary and sufficient interpersonal conditions for fostering change, and Transtheoretical model (stages of change).
  • Apply basic MI skills to improve hearing aid use and outcome.
  • Deliver audiology consultation sessions consistent with the process of MI comprising: engaging, focusing, evoking and planning.
  • Apply the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) tool as a training/quality monitoring instrument.
  • Use MI technique of elicit-provide-elicit (EPE) when sharing information with patients.
  • Critically discuss the principles of psycholinguistics and its relevance to MI.
  • Critically appraise the research evidence on MI.
