Chair's Update October 2024

Dear members,

This may seem a little early to be thinking about, but we like to be prepared; planning has started for World Hearing Day 2025.  One of the glorious features of this event is that the celebrations of hearing care can take any number of formats.  Would you like to give a local presentation?  Perhaps an open day to your department for the community to meet your team?  We would really like to hear about what you have in mind.

As we are deep into conference-season, it is worth highlighting the resounding success of The World Congress of Audiology (WCA) in Paris; a great opportunity for professionals around the world to collaborate and share their work.  The next WCA in 2026 will be in Seoul (Korea), followed by the 60th anniversary of the WCA in 2028 to be hosted in Edinburgh.

You will spot lots of links to studies in this e-update.  BSA membership has such a depth of experience, participating in studies such as these provide the opportunity to develop our knowledge, but also, supports our emerging and developing professionals in completing their courses through carrying out research.  It is also very exciting to see the reintroduction of the BSA small research grants, the details of which are in this e update.

Given some misunderstanding about the relationship between hearing loss and dementia, Kevin Munro and Piers Dawes are leading a working group comprising of members of BSA Adult Rehabilitation SIG and representatives from BAA and BSHAA and others.  This working group is developing a position statement which plans to include a review of the evidence and implications for clinical practice and discussions with patients.  It will be available on our website and a link included in the e-update as soon as it is complete.

Best regards

Siobhan Brennan
