Chair's Update July 2025

On behalf of everyone at the British Society of Audiology, we are delighted to congratulate BSA member and Principal Fellow of the BSA Professor Philip Newall on his inclusion in the King’s Birthday Honours List in Australia.  This recognition is a testament to his outstanding contributions in Audiology.

Welcome to Joanna Lemańska as our new online learning Trustee.  Joanna is a senior lecturer at De Montfort University, and we look forward to the developments of the BSA online learning that Joanna will bring.

Huge thanks go to Amanda Hall, who after 7 years in the role as chair of the BSA Research and Development Group is steps down. This group has gone from strength to strength including oversight of the BSA RDG grants, research mentorship and networking, and research seminars.

The Practice Guidance Practice Guidance Aural Care (Ear Wax Removal) has recently had a small number of significant changes, and we thank the authors for their work on this, the Professional Guidance Group and the National Aids Trust for their input to these changes.

It was fascinating to read some of the earliest instructions for audiometry which included the surprising line “Any excitement is like to lead to error when refined measurements are required.”  (Richardson 1879).  Audiometry has been on an interesting evolution since then.  Returning to the present day, a consultation on the current BSA Recommended Procedure: “Pure tone air and bone conduction threshold audiometry with and without masking”, has been completed and a working group convened to update and review this document.  We look forward to our membership feedback on any changes that are put forward.
