Chair's Update February 2025

Many thanks to Rosie Adams for all of her excellent work as Chair of the Balance Special Interest Group as she hands the baton to Simon Howe.  We are delighted to welcome Simon to the role.  The Balance Special Interest Group is a very active SIG, with one great piece of work being the development of the new VEMP Recommended Procedure.  We will of course keep you posted on the progress of that work.

If you’re feeling in the mood to explore a new topic, or refresh an old one, the HCPC ‘CPD Week’ on 3 – 7 March 2025: https://www.hcpc-uk.org/news-and-events/get-involved/cpd-week-2025 .  This is the first week of this type for the HCPC and each day has a different theme.  We would love to hear your recommendations for courses that you are attending or are contributing to.

Our current Heritage Lead, Rosie Mayers is exploring the history of the BSA.  For history buffs, Rosie tells us:  “The Founding Fathers first met with others on 13th January 1967 to promote the status of Audiology as a discipline by the formation of the BSA.   Aims were set.  One of which was to provide a common platform for discussion amongst various disciplines involved in audiological work irrespective of their job title.  In just a few months at the inaugural meeting on the 8th September that year there were over 100 in its membership. By 1968 the World Congress, hosted by the BSA and held in London, this figure had doubled. It continued to grow thereafter with a membership which now extends across the globe.  September 2027 is the 60th anniversary of the BSA.”

Representatives from the BSA are meeting with the Health and Safety Executive to discuss surveillance audiometry quality.  If you are interested in the HSE’s work in this area, more information is available here:  HSE: Noise at work – health and safety in the workplace
