Tax relief on membership subscriptions

We would remind members that subscriptions are usually tax-deductible, effectively reducing the cost by 20% (basic rate taxpayer) or 40% (higher rate taxpayer). The BSA is on the list of HMRC professional bodies and learned societies with tax-deductible fees. This means that you can claim tax relief on your annual BSA membership subscription provided:

You should keep a record of the membership subscriptions you have paid and you can make a claim within 4 years of the end of the tax year in which you paid a subscription. You should claim tax relief using a Self Assessment tax return (if you already complete one) or apply using HMRC Form P87 (Income Tax: tax relief for expenses of employment) which can be downloaded from the HMRC website: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/income-tax-tax-relief-for-expenses-of-employment-p87. The HMRC will usually make any adjustments needed through your tax code for the current tax year.
